- Geena Davis to celebrate "A League of Their Own" anniversary with Salt Lake Bees on July 27. In conjunction with Zions Bank and the Utah Film Center, the Salt Lake Bees will welcome Geena Davis to Spring Mobile Ballpark on Friday, July 27 for a 20th anniversary celebration of "A League of Their Own". A free showing of the film, to be introduced by Davis, will take place on the outfield grass immediately following the game. In addition, Davis will participate in batting practice with the Bees, throw the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game and lead the crowd in singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch. The event will feature recognition of the Utah Shamrocks, one of the top women's fast-pitch softball teams in the country from 1935-78, while the current USA Baseball Women's National Team coaching staff will also take part in the celebration. Academy-award winning actor Geena Davis traveled to Nashville to help raise awareness on the portrayal of women and girls in media at a Lipscomb University event. "We are communicating to society that women and girls are less important than men and boys... Our children should be seeing boys and girls sharing the sandbox equally," Davis said. Geena Davis will visit Nashville May 23 - 24 to raise awareness about the portrayal of women and girls in the media. She will also continue her support for Women and Girls Lead, a multi-year public media initiative of ITVS, PBS and Nashville Public Television (NPT). On May 23, Davis will speak to a group of NPT board members and debut the Davis Institute's See Jane spots produced by students of Lipscomb University in Nashville. On May 24, Davis will deliver the keynote address at "A League of Their Own," a fundraising event at Lipscomb, hosted by the Nelson and Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership. - Assembly funds California Women's Commission chaired by Geena Davis. Speaker John A. Pérez announced the California state assembly voted to provide funding to the California Commission on the Status of Women, chaired by Geena Davis, with $150,000 from the assembly's own budget. Gov. Jerry Brown had originally proposed eliminating the commission's budget over concerns some of the work performed was repetitive. - Geena Davis on gender inequity in family films at WSJ's CEO Council. On Nov. 15, 2011, Geena Davis discussed media depiction of women at the recent Wall Street Journal's CEO Council event as well as the impact on young children. Sexualization of female characters in G-rated movies and the lack of leading female characters are top issues the media industry needs to give more attention. "We are showing kids a really, almost 1950s version of society, where there are far fewer female characters and the ones that are there are highly stereotyped... They are very much hyper-sexualized," Davis said of G-rated films. Watch the Video...

Davis believes the U.S. will elect a female president during her lifetime, but there's quite a bit of work to be done first in changing people's perceptions of women as political leaders given they're still treated much differently than their male counterparts. During her Sept. 24, 2011 appearance on Piers Morgan Tonight, Davis said the U.S. people have to get to a point where it's completely normal to see females as political leaders. "We have to get to where it's just as likely for a woman to be a president as a man, and we're not anywhere close to that yet.
